As temperatures make their way into the eighties in Charlotte, reliable air conditioning becomes vital to staying comfortable. So what should you do if your A/C unit stops blowing cold air? Read on for some tips from Andersen Heating & Cooling to keep your air conditioner working properly this spring and summer.

Clean off outdoor AC unit

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that there’s an outdoor component to your A/C system that makes cooling your home possible. Regular maintenance of your outdoor unit is key to keeping your air conditioner working properly. Make sure all shrubs, trees and bushes growing near the unit are trimmed back. In addition, keep all leaves and branches off of the top of the unit. This will allow the air conditioner to move air freely without overworking.

Set thermostat to AUTO

If your air conditioner isn’t working, one of the first things to check is the thermostat. In particular, you want to check its fan setting. It may seem like common sense to set your fan to “ON”- why wouldn’t you want your air conditioner to be on? Well, the ON setting actually just keeps the fan running nonstop, all day long. Therefore, even when the A/C unit isn’t producing cold air, the fan is running, which can result in a warm breeze flowing through your home. Instead, use the AUTO setting on your thermostat. AUTO will only run the fan when cold air is needed, keeping your home cool and comfortable all day and night.

Change your air filters in Charlotte, NC

Dirty air filters are responsible for countless air conditioning issues, so if your unit isn’t working, it’s probably time to check the filter. When dust and debris clog the filter, the air conditioner will have a hard time cooling, and can even experience costly damage. Make sure to change your air filter at least once a month in order to keep you air conditioner working properly.
