There’s nothing worse than reaching for the doorknob only to receive an unexpected and painful shock. Why does there seem to be so much static electricity in your home, and what can you do about it? Andersen Heating & Cooling has the answers.

Static electricity in winter

Static electricity is a nuisance, but it usually becomes more of a problem during winter. Why is this? Well, it all has to do with moisture. During winter in Charlotte, the air has low relative humidity compared to spring and summer. Dry air prevents electrons from moving freely, which causes electrical charge to build up on various surfaces. In addition, we crank the heat during winter which dries out the air in our homes even more. This creates perfect conditions for increased static electricity in the home.

Humidifier benefits in Charlotte, NC

So, if low relative humidity is the problem, then raising your home’s humidity is the solution. And there’s no more effective way to increase humidity than with a humidifier. A whole house humidifier installed in your HVAC system will reduce static electricity and improve your furnace or heat pump’s efficiency.

Houseplants raise humidity

Another great way to reduce static shock is with houseplants. Plants function as small humidifiers of their own, releasing moisture throughout the home. Also, houseplants filter toxins out of the air, so you can reduce static electricity while breathing easier this winter.

Bonus tips from Andersen Heating & Cooling

While the previous tips are the most effective ways to reduce static shock, there are many ways to keep yourself from being zapped throughout the day. Add baking soda to your laundry to lessen the electrical charge in your clothes. Similarly, you can attach metal safety pins to your clothes or rub them with metal hangers to absorb some of the charge. Finally, make sure to use dryer sheets when drying your clothes.
