Andersen sizes every heat pump with a Manual J load calculation based on your square footage, insulation, windows, and ductwork. Size it off the old unit’s nameplate, and you either short-cycle through the mild months or lean on expensive electric strip heat every January.

Is a Heat Pump Enough to Heat a Charlotte Home?

Heat pump: A single system that both heats and cools by moving heat rather than burning fuel. In winter it pulls heat from outdoor air into the house; in summer it reverses and pushes heat out.

For most Charlotte homes, yes. Charlotte’s 99% winter design temperature is about 20.5°F, meaning temperatures fall below that on only a small fraction of winter hours. A correctly sized heat pump carries the large majority of the season on its own, with backup heat engaging only during the coldest stretches. Homeowners who want more output on the coldest nights pair a heat pump with a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup.

There are three real options for a Charlotte home, and the right one depends on whether you already have natural gas service.

  • Heat pump. Best for homes on all-electric service, or replacing an existing heat pump. Output drops as outdoor temperatures approach 20°F, so backup heat carries part of the load on the coldest nights.
  • Dual-fuel, a heat pump plus a gas furnace. Best for homes with Piedmont Natural Gas service that want heat pump efficiency most of the season. Two pieces of equipment, so it prices higher than either alone. It also earns the largest Duke Energy rebate, $2,000 to $2,500.
  • Ductless mini-split. Best for additions, converted garages, older homes without ductwork, or zoning a problem room. Per-zone cost is higher than extending ductwork when ductwork already exists.

When a heat pump is not the right call. If your existing system is a gas furnace in good condition and only the cooling side has failed, replacing the AC alone usually costs less than converting to a heat pump. If your electrical panel cannot support the additional load and needs a service upgrade, that cost belongs in the comparison before you decide. And if your ductwork leaks badly, sealing the ducts often does more for comfort than any equipment upgrade. Andersen will tell you when that is the case.

What changes your price

  • System size: sized to your home with a load calculation, not guessed off the old unit’s nameplate
  • Efficiency rating: SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating. Higher ratings cost more upfront, cost less monthly, and earn a larger Duke Energy rebate

Duke Energy Heat Pump Rebates in Charlotte, 2026

Charlotte homes are served by Duke Energy Carolinas, and Duke’s Smart $aver program pays a rebate on qualifying heat pump replacements. The amount depends on the equipment’s efficiency rating and on whether your old system has already failed. Andersen submits the rebate application for you after the install.

Replace on failure or early replacement? Duke pays more for replacing a system before it dies. Early replacement applies when the old system still heats and cools and has no failed compressor, cracked heat exchanger, or major refrigerant leak. Replace on failure applies once one of those has already happened. The gap is $250 to $500 on a standard heat pump, which is a real reason not to wait for the system to quit in January.

What Duke requires: you must be a Duke Energy residential electric customer, the equipment must be AHRI certified with an ECM blower motor and meet the SEER2 and HSPF2 minimums above, the work must be done by a participating Smart $aver contractor, and program-specific duct sealing is required on heat pump replacements. The application and documentation must be submitted within 60 days of the service date. Rebates arrive as a prepaid Mastercard, usually four to six weeks after approval.

A gas furnace earns no Smart $aver rebate. Duke does not rebate gas furnaces. But if you are replacing your air conditioner anyway, an add-on heat pump paired with your existing gas furnace makes it a dual-fuel system, and that qualifies for the largest rebate in the table.

The federal tax credit is gone. The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit no longer applies to equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025, so a heat pump installed in 2026 does not qualify. Some pages still advertise it. Duke’s rebates are separate and still available.

It is a rule of thumb, not a code standard: a standard air-source heat pump’s heating output falls off enough below about 20°F that backup heat has to carry part of the load. It matters in Charlotte because the 99% winter design temperature here is about 20.5°F, right at that threshold. In practice that means backup heat runs on a handful of the coldest nights, not all winter.

Usually yes. Heat pumps in the Charlotte climate run 10 to 15 years, and a 15-year-old unit is past the point where parts are easy to source. Duke Energy also pays $250 to $500 more for replacing a system before it fails than after, so replacing a working 15-year-old heat pump earns a larger rebate than waiting for it to quit.

Duke Energy’s Smart $aver program pays $350 to $900 on a qualifying air-source heat pump replacement, $1,500 for converting electric furnace or baseboard heat to a heat pump, and $2,000 to $2,500 for converting a heat pump to dual-fuel. The federal 25C tax credit no longer applies to equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Andersen submits the Duke application for you.
